Position Description

Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical Surgical Oncology

Unit: Medical Surgical Oncology

Schedule: 3x12-hour shifts/week, every other weekend, holidays required

Unit Census: Average 30 patients, 34-bed unit

Staffing Ratio: 1:5

Shift: 9am-5pm | Mon-Fri

Position Overview

Seeking a compassionate and experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Medical Surgical Oncology Unit. The RN will deliver exceptional patient care using evidence-based practices and a relationship-centered care approach. You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide safe, effective, and empathetic care to a diverse adult oncology population.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Nursing required; BSN preferred or active enrollment in a BSN program.
  • Current NYS RN License (unencumbered).
  • BLS (American Heart Association).

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years RN experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years Med/Surg experience.
  • 1 year of travel RN experience preferred (required for travel positions; not for Per Diem).
  • Technical Skills: EPIC EMR experience highly preferred.

Responsibilities

Patient Care

Apply the nursing process to deliver safe, high-quality, patient-centered care.

Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized care based on patient needs and goals.

Coordinate care with interdisciplinary teams, patients, and families.

Prioritize teaching, discharge planning, and patient/family education.

Utilize EPIC for accurate documentation.

Patient Experience

Engage in Relationship Centered Care model.

Participate in purposeful hourly rounding and bedside shift reports.

Provide culturally sensitive care and maintain therapeutic relationships with patients and families.

Respond to and escalate patient concerns through service recovery protocols.

Quality & Safety

Implement and support process improvements, compliance measures, and high-reliability practices.

Participate in quality improvement initiatives and peer review.

Escalate safety hazards following institutional protocols.

Operations

Act as charge nurse when assigned.

Monitor inventory and escalate staffing or supply needs.

Facilitate efficient patient throughput and transitions of care.

Professional Development

Commit to ongoing learning, innovation, and professional growth.

Participate in unit councils, committees, and shared decision-making.

Advance clinical expertise and support the learning of peers and students.
