Position Description
Job Summary:
We are currently seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to support patient care services at MSH. This role is ideal for compassionate, skilled LPNs looking to contribute to a dynamic healthcare team in a structured care setting. The position aligns with standard LPN functions in New York State and may apply to similar future roles as organizational needs evolve.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The practice of nursing as an LPN involves delivering supportive and restorative care, administering medications and treatments, and performing clinical tasks under the supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse or a licensed physician/dentist. Core responsibilities include:
- Deliver nursing care in structured and routine situations free of scientific complexity.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs).
- Administer routine treatments and clinical procedures (e.g., suctioning, urinary catheterizations).
- Prepare patients for surgery, diagnostic testing, procedures, and examinations.
- Administer medications within scope; collect, label, and process specimens.
- Set up intravenous (IV) equipment and deliver IV solutions through peripheral access devices.
- Administer blood or blood products with appropriate IV certification.
- Observe and report on patient conditions, treatments, medications, and incidents to the RN; document accurately using facility standards.
- Contribute to nursing care planning and collaborate with other nursing staff.
- Reinforce education plans provided by the RN to patients and families.
- Provide emotional support to patients, families, and significant others.
- Assist in patient rehabilitation as per the care plan.
- Ensure patient safety and physical comfort at all times.
- Participate in patient care discussions and interdisciplinary meetings.
- Respond to emergency situations (e.g., initiate Team 7000 call, perform BCLS, assist resuscitation efforts); document emergency care appropriately.
Required Education and Certification:
A. Completion of an educational program for licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
B. Successful completion of the New York State Department of Health LPN IV Therapy Initial Program for competence in IV therapy and blood administration.
C. Completion of annual unit-based reviews and updates related to intravenous therapy procedures.
Licensing & Certification Requirements:
- LPN License – Issued by the New York State Department of Health
- Basic Life Support (BLS) – Issued by the American Heart Association (AHA)
